So Twisted Mix Tape is back!! I’m excited and ready for the challenge….besides, I’ve been having blogging brain toots and this is the perfect thing to get me going.
My summer was filled with music of all sorts but to be honest with you the ones that I can’t get out of my head are my cumbia oldies but goodies….mostly because my boyfriend recently joined a conjunto band named Conjunto Sereno and I get excited and sentimental when I hear music that reminds me of my family, growing up, and my days as a quincenera cumbia dancing queen LOL, or so I want to believe that my dancing abilities blow everyone away. Conjunto/ Tejano is danced a lot different than cumbias so the bf has to push me to dance, but I always secretly want to. There’s a lot of competition from all the old fogies. It’s intimidating!
So, I have spent my summer being chicle (bubble gum) to my boyfriend. I’ve been going with him to the gigs and he LOVES it, but wants to be all cool about me being chicle. I’m glad that he’s opened the door of conjunto music for me and I always enjoy hearing him practice….gives me time to blog and get things done. Anyways, my mix tape is a combination of songs Conjunto Sereno covers. One, because I can’t get them out of my head. Two, because I wanted to post the originals, the way I remember while growing up, but mostly because I have yet to record a gig of theirs….and also because I get a kick out of these music videos.
1. La del Mono Colorado- Los Pedernales.
2. Te He Prometo_ Leo Dan
3. El Coco Rayado- Ruben Vela
4. Golpes en el Corazon- Los Tigres del Norte
5. Mi Destino- Conjunto Sereno
So while I was looking on YouTube I found this song. My BF caught me singing it the other day while doing laundry.
My dancing partner is taking a break. I’m suppose to be cleaning w/ the broom but who can say no to dancing to Celoso by Toppaz.
This song brings back childhood memories of being in Mexico. Spending summers with my prima Laura… Driving down my abuelita Lilia’s callejon. Potholes everywhere, my body swaying from the bumps, the tienditas where I always went to buy my coca cola and rancheritos passing by . The bright sun’s heat coming in through my Tio Carlos blue van. Looking out the window and feeling comfortably home. I miss my Mexico…
As this memory beautifully plays in my mind, somber memories creep up…dancing drunk to this song, tears rolling down after drinking a bottle of wine start coming to me…. cleaning brokenhearted. Closing my eyes…singing at the top of my lungs, para desahogarme. Swaying my body to sooth my soul…. and only to find myself opening my eyes to an Islander’s deceiving smile.
In the end, This song….music…. has seen my heart’s most inconsolable collapses and my most treasured joys.
A beautiful night spent in company of 2 of my beautiful sisters.
Awesome atmosphere, yummy drinks, and music fusion.
I decided to dedicate this lyric genius MixTape to Maná. Maná is a Mexican rock/pop group who’s music revolves around speaking the truth of love, saving mother earth, freedom, spirituality. Its a shame that there is no literal emotional word translation for Spanish. The passionate mixture of words, rhythm, pace, and intensity, is what gives the Spanish music its spirit. Call me crazy, but when I find music that hits that perfect spot in the corners of my soul… All I want is for that person to feel the same emotional pull. I love being impacted by music. Most of the time I find myself passionately, overtaken, and in love with the lyrics. I find myself loving the words even if I can’t directly, with my life experience, relate to that particular song. Maná is the one band that always does that for me. Their combination of beats and lyrics make for the perfect mixture of musical poetry. Mana’s, and I say Mana because everyone in that group has collaborated musically…Their lyrics always speak to me in ways that move me. I think I’m taking this MixTape a little too serious…but I love analyzing and exploring meaning behind words. Music heals…it transports you…Its like poetry to me…. Continue reading
So I been listing to a lot of Celso Pina Pandora radio. He’s been my driving buddy, my cleaning compadre, my shower companion… It was like Diosito blessed me with the most perfect station…well, until I accidentally pressed “like” on one of the songs with my big fat thumb. Then Celso Pina station was never the same…..
I cried, I’m not gonna lie Continue reading

Song #1 Titanium– This was my anthem last year so when I heard it on the radio covered in Spanish…I was super excited.

If my life had a soundtrack…

So after much confusion, I was still confusing myself. I decided that I was going to make a soundtrack of my most treasured or important musical memories in my life. Continue reading
